What is Silver Diamine Fluoride?

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved topical solution used to treat and prevent tooth decay while also reducing sensitivity. It works through two active ingredients: silver, which acts as an antimicrobial agent to kill decay-causing bacteria and prevent new biofilm from forming, and fluoride, which stops further softening and breakdown of the tooth structure.

Will SDF Restore the Teeth?

It’s important to know that SDF does not replace the need for restorations like fillings or crowns when those are needed to repair a tooth’s function or appearance — but it is highly effective at halting the progression of decay.
